A great wealth of Gdansk for centuries determined the proximity of the Vistula and the Baltic Sea. In this section, we suggest realization of events, which on one hand will introduce the interesting Vistula-Baltic issues, on the other will be an opportunity for a successful rest. Tourist traffic in Gdansk and Gdynia support stylized galleons, which in appearance are not very different from the seventeenth-century pirate ships.
Owing to amber, the coasts of the southern Baltic Sea were known already to the ancient Greeks and Romans. At present, Gdańsk aspires to be called the global capital of amber. The theme of amber includes its mining, artistic processing and the therapeutic application of this priceless resin. Everything started in this city! The social protests from the early 1980s resulted in certain concessions of the communist authorities, most importantly the establishment of the independent trade union – Solidarity – the first legal political opposition in the post-war Poland. In the next several years, Solidarity made the socialist system collapse in Poland, followed by the breakdown of communist regimes in other East European countries. The atmosphere of the events from thirty years ago can be seen in St. Bridget’s Church, at the Monument of the Killed Shipyard Workers and in the ‘Roads to Freedom’ Exhibition.
The Gothic architecture of Gdańsk is admired by tourists who visit the city. The steep towers, massive walls, pillars, windows and meticulous ceilings present the great skills of the medieval architects. Their persistence is evidenced by the construction of St. Mary’s Church, the largest brick church in the world, which took more than 150 years. A visit to the Gothic churches is also a splendid opportunity to experience medieval art.
The centuries of Oliwa’s history are closely related to the order of hard-working Cistercians. They were invited at the end of 12th century to the unknown and scarcely inhabited Oliwa and turned this place into the booming centre of economy and culture. There are still many monuments of Cistercian past in the district: a marvellous park, a priceless monastery church and the water mill hidden in the forest valley. If you follow the footsteps of the white monks, you will be able to experience the world of medieval contemplation, the Baroque unrest and the Rococo music.
